Stalking Or Standing For the Wildlife Photographer
Perhaps an age-old question for the wildlife photographer is whether to stalk or stand in search of a wily subject. Both strategies offer distinct advantages and disadvantages. The key is for the photographer to apply deliberate strategy appropriate to the environment and the cunning subject.
Stalking involves moving in search of wildlife with hopes of happening upon an intended or even random creature. Because animals have such keen senses, you are at an immediate disadvantage when stalking. Animals utilize greatly enhanced sight, hearing, and smell to sense an approaching potential predator. As such, the wildlife photographer must go to great lengths to regain advantage.
Keep in mind that predators such as wolves have eyes generally pointing forward creating a narrower field of vision but excellent ability to see precisely where something is in relation to itself. On the other hand, prey animals such as deer have eyes pointing more toward the side to increase their field of vision. Deer have a field of vision approaching 300 degrees.
Every wild animal has an enhanced sense of hearing. No vertebrate species are known to be deaf. As a matter of survival, most wild photography subjects are going to hear you before you see them. Thus stalking is an exponential challenge.
As you might expect, animals' sense of smell is profound as well. The grizzly bear can smell a food source up to two miles away. While its sight and hearing are similar to humans, its sense of smell will invariably put you in its eyesight before it's in your viewfinder. Foxes have over 200,000,000 scent receptors in their nose. They can distinguish specific threats and even the direction they're traveling. Consider using masking scents available to hunters and don't use scented soaps and shampoos before embarking on an excursion.
Camouflage coupled with deliberate stalking techniques like slow movement, low profile, and extreme patience can also help overcome sensual advantage of animals. It's also critical that the photographer be extensively familiar with the environment. Animals certainly know their habitat intimately. Most, especially mammals, have even developed escape routes from approaching predators.
An advantage of stalking is that you're likely to encounter a greater number of subjects, if only by virtue of exposing yourself to more habitats. By understanding and predicting a particular subject's behavior, a photographer can establish stalking as a realistic strategy to putting wildlife in the viewfinder.
Another disadvantage of stalking is that you're most likely to surprise animals and force portrait shots as opposed to candid shots. Portraits involve the animal looking directly at the lens. While they can be quite striking and certainly have a place in portfolios, portraits are typically less sensational than a shot of an animal behaving naturally, unaware of the photographer's presence.
Standing involves stationary positioning with hopes that wildlife will pass an area and afford the photographer predetermined composition. This strategy also requires camouflage, extreme patience and thorough knowledge of the habitat.
It's vital that the photographer have confidence that an area is traversed by wildlife. It can be very frustrating to stand on an area for hours on end and encounter no subjects. One technique for confirming an area is likely to be frequented by wildlife is to observe it after a snowfall. Snow provides fantastic substrate to capture tracks of every animal. Once paths are evident, consider wind and sun direction to position yourself strategically. Even after the snow has melted, you'll have great confidence your position is practical. Consider using a blind to afford moderate movement without fear of being detected.
Whether you decide to stalk or stand in pursuit of an ideal wildlife photo, be deliberate about your strategy. Careful planning and application of your choice will put you in the right place at the right time. Leave as little to chance as possible and enable yourself to compose rather than react. You'll notice immediate results and allow yourself to concentrate on the quality of shots rather than just getting a shot.
Andrew Beebe is a wildlife photographer and proprietor of ShutterSplash Photography. He teaches animal tracking, sign, and behavior to help photographers locate wild animals and get as close to their subjects as possible. Classroom and field sessions are offered to groups or individuals interested in locating animals for once in a lifetime photo opportunities. His website is http://www.shuttersplash.com.
