Klaus Jaritz
australia nature landscapes plants skies | Portfolio | Profile & Contact

I like to photograph the scenery of the Australian outback – wide and stark and empty, just the essentials, no waste on niceties.
And I like to catch flowers. Looking close at them in macro I am fascinated by the beauty of pure geometries. And I am equally fascinated by the sky with its ever changing exhibits of abstracts.
I am trying to find a way to combine both. God stuck flowers into the soil. Some people stick them into button holes. I want to stick them onto heaven.
Where they belong.

Why Most Traveller's Photos Aren't Travel Photography

Travel photography is probably one of the most misunderstood fields of commercial photography. For most photographers, the only requirement for shooting travel images is for them to be travelling, but the reality is very different. The good news is, this mass misconception means there's real opportunity for the photographers who do get it right.

Travel photography is as commercial as it gets. Travel photography buyers want photos that actively sell the destination or the experience. The need the kinds of photos that engage the viewer and leave them wanting to do it all themselves. In most cases, that will mean using images of people enjoying the destination or experience.

The problem they face is most photographers are more likely to be shooting holiday snaps than commercial travel images. Most photographers think of travel photography simply as images taken on their own travels, and little thought is given to the end use. They shoot whatever they see, as they see it, and focus on the physical features alone.

As a result they are simply documenting their travels, making a personal record, with little thought of sharing and selling the experience itself.

Don't get me wrong here: the physical record type shots can and do sell: the iconic landmarks, the famous vistas, the local wildlife, the buildings, bridges and skylines. There is a definite demand for all of them, but when you start researching the market you'll soon see that these only make up a fraction of the images used. The majority of images used in travel guides and brochures fall into the travel-lifestyle category: people experiencing the destination.

This supply-and-demand problem is compounded by the fact that everyone shoots the iconic shots, and they've been shooting them since cameras were invented. It's also safe to say that most travel publishers are also going to have their own in-house collection of the iconic shots they use most often. So if that's all you ever shoot, you're going to face massive competition for a small portion of the potential sales.

So when you start shooting travel stock images that focus on the visitor-experience, you are targeting a niche in the market with much lower competition and significantly higher demand. If you can then create the kinds of images that engage the viewer and fire their imagination ... making them want to experience it for themselves ... then you're shooting commercial travel photography.

The added bonus of concentrating on the visitor experience is that as soon as 'people' are included, photo-buyers are going to need current images showing contemporary hairstyles & fashions. So these are the shots that are always in demand and can't always be sourced from the in-house collection. The backdrop might be a 2000 year old landmark, but the people viewing it will need to be contemporary, so there will always be a strong demand for fresh new travel photography.

As often happens, most of this is simple, common-sense, once you take a Client-centric approach and start planning & shooting for your end-user rather than yourself. Research your destinations, identify the landmarks and icons, but take a little more time to really understand the total experience of the destination.

The good news is, most photographers won't bother, so any time you create the kind of travel photography that the viewer wants to be part of, that they want to experience for themselves, you'll be shooting the kinds of travel images that sell themselves.
