From: Matt Brading
OzImages International Pty Ltd
July 2009
Dear Fellow Photographer,
Since 1998 OzImages has helped hundreds of photographers from right around the world grow their photography business and sell more photos. If you've got a few minutes to spare, I'd like to show you what we can do for you.
What you're about to read will be quite different to any other Stock Photography Library you might have looked at already. We were the first major online Stock Library to take a co-operative approach to marketing our work and building our businesses and while there's been some imitators over the years, we're still the best.
If you've been looking around for a stock library to represent you, you're probably feeling the pressure by now ... worrying that the wrong decision could cost you sales and if you take too long you might miss out on something ...
Well for starters, you should relax and take your time. There are two things you need to know before we go any further.
Fact 1: If your work is good enough you should make sales no matter which photo library you settle on. The quality, content and volume of your work is far more important than the outlet you choose.
Fact 2: Stock Photography is a long term business that you'll be working on for years. A week or two now to get things set up right isn't going to have a major impact on your long term results.
The truth is the market for quality Stock Photography is huge and despite what the industry nay-sayers might tell you, the demand for quality images of commercial content is only getting stronger.
There's no shortage of serious photo buyers who'll pay good prices for the right images and if you've got the content, it's a great time to be getting into Stock.
Stock Photography is a great business to be in and if you've got what
it takes it's definitely worth taking your time now to get it right.
That said, Stock has always been a fickle business.
Trends and fashions can change overnight and top performing images suddenly stop selling for no apparent reason. Photographers can feel like they're bouncing around on the tide, and al lthey can do is hope they have the right image posted in the right place at the right time to make a sale.
The average stock photographer is completely out of the feedback loop and totally dependent on a third-party business organization that they have zero control over.
The photographers have no contact with the actual photo buyers so they're totally dependent on the library for leads, sales, feedback and direction.
It leaves them totally at the mercy of the library management and if things aren't happening they're virtually powerless to do much about it.
In this day and age that's just not a sustainable business model.
Well you've now found a stock photo library that takes a very different approach.
We aren't just trying to sell a few photos for you -- if your work is any good then pretty much any stock library can do that -- instead we want to work with you to develop a complete marketing system for your photography business.
We'll help you increase your exposure in expanding markets so you can grow a viable, sustainable and independent stock photography business. One where you're in control and one where you always have options.
Doesn't that sound like a better plan?

Now you might have already noticed, this page is quite long. There's a lot of information and it's important that you read it all before you get involved. However, I do appreciate that your time is precious and you probably won't want to invest too much of it in this until you know what it's all about ... that's fair enough too. So what follows is just the meat, a quick overview of what you get with OzImages membership so you can decide if it might worth a closer look: (OzImages is UNIQUE as a marketing platform for photographers -- we're definitely not your average stock library -- so if you are at all interested in getting involved, we do encourage you to take your time and read this page in full before you continue!) For now though, here it is in a nutshell ...
This is just the essentials .. you can see a detailed feature list a little further down the page .. but it should give you a feel for what's on offer here. You get a fully-managed professional photographer's web presence, so you can concentrate on doing what you do best ... creating great photography.
Our front-end service to Photo Buyers is essentially a Stock Photo Library, quite similar to most others you'll find on the internet. However, the service we offer our Photographers is anything but a typical agency arrangement. We're set up to generate leads and sales for you, but we also give you all the "tools" so you can "build" a more complete online photography business as well. We encourage direct contact between you and your customers, so you don't have to sit patiently waiting for stock sales. Instead you can get pro-active and grow your business as you see fit. Whether you're just starting out or you've been shooting and selling your photos for years you won't find a better way to market your photos online and grow your photography business. It's also important that you understand we're looking for long-term business partners here. We're looking for people we can work with for many years to come. Many of our Photographers have been with us ten years now, and it's that sort of long-term vision we'll be looking for from you. So if you're just looking to make some small change from your hobby, then this isn't going to be right for you. This is a commercial business package. If you're looking for quick cash or some sort of photographic-get-rich-quick scheme, sorry but this ain't it! If you just want to dump your photos in a library and forget about it, then this isn't for you either. That stopped working years ago. On the other hand, if you might be interested in joining a community of like-minded photographers to promote your work, share costs and grow your business, then you've found it. Heard Enough? You Can Click Here To Get Started What follows is a simple application process ... you register as a Pending Member, then we'll ask you a few questions and you can send us a few samples of your work. There's no cost, no obligation and no risk. We'll look over your application and if we think we're a good match then we'll invite you to join with us. If we don't think you're quite ready, we'll offer a detailed review, some ideas on what you need to work on, and some resources to get you started. Either way, you have nothing to lose and much to gain. If this is sounding like it could be what you're looking for, I encourage you to read the full Information Page below then Register as a Pending Member & Get Started Today. |

Still here? That's great!
What follows is a fairly detailed explanation of what we offer and how it works. It outlines what we do and what's expected of you. If you're interested in moving forward with OzImages then we strongly recommend you read it in full.
It will save you time later on and I think you'll find plenty of useful information and ideas, even if you decide not to go any further with OzImages.
In the ten years I've been running OzImages I've seen a lot of changes in our industry -- some good, some bad, some just plain stupid! -- but my biggest concern is the growing number of photographers who are suffering information overload and just can't work out what they're supposed to be doing!
Some are stuck in the rut of doing things the way they always have. Some are just starting out and trying to do things they way they've read about in books and magazines that are horribly out of date. Others are desperately trying to follow every new trend and suggestion they hear about in the various forums and blogs.
It's no surprise a lot of photographers are feeling overwhelmed by it all.
The industry has changed. The rules have changed. Photography has changed.
In the past, some photographers had an online presence as part of their business.
Today, photography IS an online business.
You make your images offline but that's where it ends ...
- Buyers expect to view your portfolio online .
- They want to search large catalogs ... and ...
- They expect to find what they need there and then.
- They want to preview sample images instantly.
- They expect to wrap up the deal the same day.
- They demand instant delivery as soon as the deal is done.
There is no doubt that the Internet has made our lives easier and transformed our businesses in many ways, but for a photographer who just wants to get out and shoot great images, creating and maintaining any sort of web presence can be a daunting task.
Setting up a professional web presence is a big job. While most of us enjoy the creativity of the design work, and quite a few of us enjoy the technical/problem solving aspects of the development, the real work only starts once it's built ...
Marketing a website properly is a full time job What far too many photographers find out far too late, is that it's also pretty specialized work. Getting qualified buyers to visit your website is no mean feat. If you don't get it right, all your design & development work is for nothing!
Maintaining a website can also be a challenge. Your website lives on a computer after all. We all know, when they're working properly Computers are the best thing ever, but when things go wrong ... most of us would rather be out shooting photos.
Developing a website and staying up to date with all the latest is near impossible for one person. You can't possibly implement every new idea and gizmo as it comes out, but you need to keep on top of it, or else one day you wake up and find your website just doesn't deliver what your customers expect.
Faced with all this there are four basic reactions among photographers ...
1. Ignore it all, bury their head in the sand. You'll recognize these people as soon as they tell you the market has changed and no one pays good prices for photos anymore. The industry is doomed, you're wasting your time and they're just going to sit it out thank you very much ...
2. Don't know any better, so keep doing what it says in the books. These are the photographers who have read somewhere that they can post their work in a stock library and sit back and wait for the cash to roll in. Unfortunately the sit-back-and-wait approach stopped working years ago and no one has rewritten the books yet ...
3. Do-It-Yourself website designers, builders and marketers. Unfortunately they very quickly become part-time photographers as they realise how much work is required. Sure some photographers who go it alone actually do quite well but as a general rule, the better the web presence, the less time the photographer actually gets behind a camera!
4. Then there are those who choose to plug their work into an existing system that is fully established and ready-to-go. They have immediate access to a ready-made platform and an existing Client base. The library handles all the marketing & promotion, the technical headaches when things go wrong and they can keep up to date with trends and technology.
And that's exactly what OzImages offers you:
A complete plug-and-play Stock Photography Marketing Business.
You get to turn all the tedious and technical stuff over to people
who thrive on it
and you stick with what you do best: Making
great photography!
We call it the 100% Stock Photography Business
|
| You get a 100% complete online photography business -- plug-and-play -- just add your images and you're ready to go. |
|
| You keep 100% control of your photos, we don't handle your originals and we don't require exclusive access to your work. |
|
| You keep 100% control of your business, you set your prices, you deal with the buyers and you always have the final say. |
|
| You keep 100% of your sales, we charge no commission whatsoever on your sales. |
We understand that every photographer is different, so you get a complete package of tools, features and services, that you apply to your business as you see fit.
Our package is built around our Stock Photo Library, but it is always your business to build and operate in a way that suits you.
Here's a brief list of what you get and what you can do with it ...
|
| Expand your personal list of buyers overnight: Show your professional portfolio to multiple Clients in dozens of different countries, all at once, without ever having to let your precious originals out of your sight. |
|
| Set up a 24/7 shop front for your work. Submit up to 10,000 of your images to our state-of-the-art search engine, giving Photo Buyers everywhere quick and easy access to your images. |
|
| Maintain Your Own Identify. Send your personal Clients to search your collection only from any of your individual pages ... you get all the benefits of a big stock library without getting lost in the crowd! |
|
| Hands-Free Pricing & RM Licensing. Enable our built-in Stock Photo Price Calculator to automate the sales process. This returns an appropriate price based on the Clients' intended usage and your preferences. |
|
| ... Or Keep As Much Control As You Want. If you prefer more control over how your images are used and how much is paid for them, you can have Clients submit their usage details instead so you can prepare a quote and proceed from there. |
|
| Let buyers tell you what they want. Sometimes a buyer is in a hurry, or needs a lot of images, or knows a request is going to be hard to fill .... or simply can't be bothered searching themselves. If you've got something suitable you respond with low-res previews ... if it works for the Client you get a sale, all with minimal effort. |
|
| Get Commissioned Assignment Work. Sometimes a Client will need a photographer in a certain area, or someone with a specific specialty. We don't see as many assignments as we do straight stock sales, but when they happen they are extremely lucrative. |
|
|
Get fast search engine exposure. Group your photos into themed lightboxes
and we'll announce them through our RSS newsfeeds, from where they are usually
picked up by the major search engines in a matter of days. Because these are
tightly themed lightboxes, people are going to arrive on a page showing exactly
what they're looking for!
Highly targeted prospective buyers delivered right to your doorstep! |
|
|
Shared Lightboxes with targeted buyers. Using the same Themed Lightbox
arrangement, you can set up specific lightboxes for specific Clients.
Some of our Photographers send out dozens of Lightbox Invites every month to carefully selected/researched Clients ... with fantastic results! It's a great way to prospect for new buyers and to keep in touch with your existing Clients. |
|
| Your Own Personal Publicity Machine. Post your story ideas, news of your travels, what you've been shooting, what you're planning to cover to your personal News Blog. These posts go out instantly through our RSS Newsfeed and generate a lot of interest. |
|
| Query Thousands of Buyers Each Month. We also pick the best items from the members' individual News Blogs each month to include in our own email Newsletter to Clients. That's like sending a query letter to 12,000+ of receptive editors every month. |
|
|
Create Front Page Galleries to present selections of your very best work
with a brief commentary. This makes a great platform for those special sets
of images you know someone is going to be interested in.
Got a photo essay you haven't been able to place? A great idea for a coffee table book you want some feedback on? A special interest you'd like to share? Submit them as a Gallery Exhibit and we'll show it on our home page where you are guaranteed an audience! |
|
| Your Own Website, no HTML required! This is a mini-website we publish for you that ties together each of your personal pages with one fully customized home page, and another specially designed, search engine friendly 'landing page'. It's ready to go as-is, or you can get in and really make it your own! |
|
| Show off your published work in our Tearsheet Gallery. This gets a lot of Client interest, especially when they are in 'browse' mode, and it's no coincidence that many of these images end up being multiple sellers. |
|
| Join the Members-Only Discussion Forum for advice on equipment or processes, legal issues, pricing & contracts, copyright issues, scanning, digital work and more. The talent and experience gathered here is incredible and the community spirit and willingness to assist is remarkable. |

|
| You can monitor all photo-buyer activity on the website ... Quote Requests, License Requests and even unposted Price Calculations ... to see both the subjects buyers are looking for and the ways they wish to use the images. |
|
| Check what content is popular now? You can easily check which Photos, Portfolios and Personal Websites are getting the most views. Also available are full stats on the visitor traffic through the site each month. |
|
| A virtual goldmine in the archives. You can probably image, after ten years we've got a lot of valuable information on file. So can you imagine a few ways you could put these tools to work to boost your business and ramp up your sales? Well keep reading because it's about to get even better ...
With OzImages You Pay No Commission On Your Sales
Traditionally stock libraries have always deducted a commission ... usually 50% or more ... from each and every sale a photographer would make. The more productive the photographer the more they end up paying, often tens of thousands of dollars every year.
Well OzImages was set up by a group of photographers who weren't happy with that arrangement and figured you shouldn't be penalized for doing well!
Instead we chose a co-operative approach where we would share the costs of running our library among our members up front, so our expenses are minimized and all sales go directly to the photographers.
Now I understand this is a sticking point for some photographers ... "why should I pay to sell my work" ... you might even be thinking that now?
Well the fact of the matter is, no matter what 'structure' the library uses, if you sell your work through an agency you will be paying someone, something for that service.
Our Member Photographers simply choose to pay a small amount up front,
rather than give up thousands of dollars in commissions later.
Obviously this won't suit everyone, but the math is simple ... Our complete photography business packages start from just $27.50 a month.
A photographer making a couple of average sales a month will save thousands in agency commissions over the course of a year.
Even if you're just starting out, you still only need just one or two sales in your first year to come out in front with OzImages.
Of course if your work is really good then the
last thing you want is a commission-based library!
One of our early sales was for US$10,000. If we were a commission library, the photographer would have given up US$5,000 of that straight away as commission.
Instead, he'd already paid his annual subscription so this one was 100% profit.
Try telling him a commission structure would have been better!
But A Commission Means You Have To Sell My Photos ...
Another myth that just won't go away is that somehow a commission structure gives a stock library greater incentive to sell your photos ...
This is one of the most enduring and damaging myths of the whole stock photography industry!
The truth is, the average commission-based stock library doesn't care whether you personally make any sales or not!
A commission based library clearly has to make sales to make money, but as long as there are sales they don't really care who owns the images that are sold.
At least they never used to when it was all 'contributor images'.
When you consider the latest trend for the big libraries to produce their own images and sell those alongside the images of their contributors, you can't help but question their priorities now?
If they sell your image they have to split the sale, but if they sell an image that they own, it's all profit. Does anyone really believe the sales process will ever be impartial or unbiased again?
I'm just amazed that so many photographers are still lining up to submit images to those libraries ... but that's getting side-tracked ...
If one photographer made every sale in a commission-based library, it would actually reduce their costs and improve their bottom line!
If that happened at OzImages we'd be out of business!
With OzImages, our ideal outcome is if ALL our photographers do well.
We want each and every photographer to renew each year so we have a genuine interest in making sure every Member gets a positive return on their investment!
While the commission structure might offer an incentive for a library to make as many sales as possible, there is no incentive for them to spread those sales around.
In most stock libraries the 80-20 rule applies ... 80% of the sales go to 20% of the photographers ... and if you're not one of the 20% then it's just too bad.
Our structure means that it's in our best interest to look after each individual photographer.
So if this is worrying you, you really need to ask yourself who really has the most incentive to sell your photos?
OzImages who wants all their photographers to succeed, or a
mega-stock library trying to cut costs and push their own images?
The bottom line is that we do look after our Member-Photographers very well and most stick with us long-term. Our founding Members have been with us ten years now and the majority of our Members have been with us four years or more!
Just in case you haven't worked this one out already: we're not looking for customers here ... we're looking for long-term business partners.
This long letter is all about giving you the information you need to decide if maybe we should do business together ... but I don't expect you to take my word for it. In any business venture, due diligence is essential, so here's some feedback from our photographers ...

Want more? Do a photographer search of your own to find someone who does similar work as you. Ask how it's working for them and what they think of OzImages.
I'm quite confident that most will tell you exactly the same thing.
OzImages works a treat and they're proud to be a part of it!
But Will My Photos Sell?
Of course what every photographer who comes through here really wants to know is, will it work for me?
Unfortunately there are many variables involved and it would be irresponsible to make that sort of prediction without knowing both you and your work.
What we can do though is share some examples of past sales to give you an idea of what our buyers have used in the past. The following list shows a random selection of sales shared by some of our Members.
Please take a moment and scroll right through the list above.
Now let me ask you this ...
1. Is your work is of a similar or better quality?
2. Did you see subjects there that you could have shot?
3. Can you imagine that you could have made some of those sales?
If you answered Yes! to each of those, then there's only one more question you need ask yourself today ...
4. Is this something you might like to do
If you're answering Yes, or even Maybe, then there's only one thing left to do ...
Wouldn't It Make Sense To Find Out?
The one goal of this whole page is to give you enough information to decide if OzImages might be worth a closer look.
That's it! I'm not asking you to commit to anything. I'm not asking for money. I'm not asking you to sign your life away.
There is absolutely no risk, no cost and no pressure. Simply the opportunity to find out if you might be right for OzImages and we might be right for you.

P.S. Still Here? Near as I can tell, there are only 4 reasons not to register and grab these valuable bonuses today:
1. No time. I'm with you here. But you know, photographers 'need' to be online and this is the most time-efficient way to do it that I know. If you do end up getting started with us, we only ask for a few hours a month, and even that is entirely optional.
The time-savers we show you will more than make up for the time you put into this. Time is a choice, not a limitation.
2. No need. If your photography business is making all the money you want, and you are building ongoing passive sales, and growing your own list of responsive photo buyers, and you're still getting time to shoot, they you've either set your sights too low, or you're not being totally honest with yourself.
The bar can always be lifted. Even if you think your current business is doing fine, aren't you at least curious to see if it could be doing better?
3. No money. There is no cost to register, submit some photos and find out if we're going to be good match. That's it! There's no catch, no obligation and absolutely no risk! Just some great bonuses you get to keep either way.
When it comes time to make a decision, keep in mind this is designed to be cash-flow positive and we have payment options starting from as little as AU$27.50 a month. That's less than US$20 and only takes one or two average sales a year to cover your investment.
4. No interest. Sorry, I don't buy it! If you think this letter was long to read you should try writing it!
You've read a very long letter right through to the end so it's safe to say you're clearly interested and you must see the potential for OzImages improve your photography business.
So what's left?
Well anything else is really just plain-old procrastination.
Not sure your work is good enough? ... find out!

Not sure you're experienced enough? ... find out!
